If you’ve been traveling to this region for awhile, you probably know that the Riviera Maya refers only to a specific stretch of Mexican Caribbean coastline. But you'd be surprised how many people still mix it up!

The term Riviera Maya was actually created in the late 1990s as part of a tourism marketing campaign to give this section of the coast its own identity— completely separate from Cancún. I’ve actually been around long enough to remember when it finally started catching on in guide books, print magazines and with travel agencies.

Technically, the Riviera Maya runs from Puerto Morelos all the way down through Tulum. In between, you’ve got spots like Playa del Carmen, Puerto Aventuras, and Akumal, all firmly inside the Riviera Maya zone.

What’s not considered part of the Riviera Maya? Cancún!! Cancún is its own city, well-established long before the Riviera Maya branding campaign began. Other Mexican Caribbean destinations that are also not a part of the Riviera Maya include Isla Mujeres, Cozumel, Holbox, and the region now branded as the Costa Maya which encompasses Bacalar and Mahahual.
