TRIVIA TIME
Playa del Carmen celebrated 32 years as its own municipality this week. It’s been more than three decades since the town officially separated from Cozumel to form the municipality of Solidaridad, which encompasses the coastal region stretching from just south of Puerto Morelos all the way through parts of Akumal. This year, the government rebranded the munipiality, changing its name from Solidaridad to Playa del Carmen.
Riviera Maya TriviaWhat was Playa del Carmen originally known as in the pre-Hispanic era? |
TIP: Playa del Carmen’s iconic performance space shares this name.

Trivia Answer: Xaman Ha
Before it became the beach town we know today, Playa del Carmen was known as Xaman Ha, which means “Waters of the North” in the Maya language. It served as a coastal stop and pilgrimage point for the Maya, who would launch canoes from its shores to reach Cozumel (Cuzamil) and worship the goddess Ixchel.
The other names on the list are real Maya sites nearby—Polé was the original name of Xcaret, while Xel-Ha was another important coastal settlement. Cuzamil is the ancient name for Cozumel itself. But only Xaman Ha refers to what is now Playa del Carmen.
