Trivia Answer: American Crocodile
The American crocodile (Crocodylus acutus) is the species most commonly found along the coasts, lagoons, and mangroves of the Riviera Maya. They prefer brackish and saltwater habitats, which is why you’ll often spot them near marinas, golf course lagoons, or mangrove-lined shores. Morelet’s crocodile does exist in Mexico too, but it’s more often found in freshwater lakes and rivers of inland Yucatán and Tabasco. So if you see a croc cruising along the fairway in Playa del Carmen or basking near Puerto Morelos,it’s almost certainly an American crocodile.
