PEOPLE ARE TALKING

📨 In last week’s newsletter we discussed the INAPAM program and the discontinued access for foreigners with legal residency. We asked to hear about your personal experiences and we received some strong remarks. Here’s what some of our readers had to say:

No problem for me getting my 50% discount. [State of Yucatan] In fact, I was armed in advance with two copies of everything they have ever asked for. I handed my resident card, my inapam and last year predial and boom, she gave me my reduced tax, did not need copies of anything, there's a first time for everything. Last year I took two walks to the copy shop when I was at the palacio to pay my predial.

My wife and I went to the inapam office in Playa last April.  We spoke to the receptionist and she brought another man to speak to us who was fluent in English.  He told us that inapam is only for Mexican citizens and I said the government website says differently and he told us that they would not take our application. He asked us how long we had been in Mexico, which was 15 years and 10 as a permanent resident. He laughingly scolded us for not becoming citizens. So we left and just decided to never use anything that inapam would create a savings. [clipped for length]

Is it me or are we starting to see the benefits of acquiring legal permanent residency being slowly stripped away? No access to the INAPAM card. No discounts for permanent residents on the Mayan Train…don’t get me started on that fiasco. What’s next? Are we going to lose the capital gains exemption when it’s time to sell our condo? It’s frustrating to try to do everything the right way and then when you are finally elegible it gets ripped away.

RIVIERA MAYA REAL ESTATE

🏝️ A Once-in-a-Lifetime Beachfront Opportunity in Akumal! 🏝️
If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a piece of paradise, this is the property to see. This isn’t just any beachfront villa—this is an iconic property in Akumal and one of only two sitting directly on Akumal Bay, where sea turtles are part of daily life and the water is impossibly clear.

This stunning 6-bedroom, 6.5-bathroom villa spans nearly 12,000 sq. ft. and was built with striking Moorish influences. The spacious design flows seamlessly from grand living areas to a massive private pool, lush gardens, and the soft white sands of Akumal Bay. And the rooftop terrace? Easily one of the best views in town.

But here’s what makes this place even more unique—it’s commercially zoned. That means beyond already being a jaw-dropping private retreat, it’s also a rare investment opportunity which could easily be converted into a boutique hotel with a bar and beachclub.

Akumal Bay is a protected marine turtle refuge and one of the most breathtaking spots on the coast. Properties like this don’t come up often here (if ever). If this villa sounds like something you’d love to own—or if you know someone who would—click here to learn more. This is a rare chance to claim an iconic piece of Akumal.

Considering Pet Insurance in Mexico

I get a lot of inquiries about insurance in Mexico. Sometimes, people have questions about the best car insurance or whether homeowners insurance is worth getting. Almost everyone is concerned about their own healthcare coverage and I can easily point them in the right direction for all of the above. This week, I got an email from a reader inquiring about the availability of pet insurance in Mexico.

What to Consider When Shopping for Pet Insurance

  • Coverage and Policy Terms

The type of coverage you choose, such as accident-and-illness, accident-only, or wellness, will determine what your pet insurance covers. It's important to read and understand the terms and conditions of your policy.

  • Preexisting Conditions
Your pet cannot be insured for treatment of a preexisting condition. Not all pet insurance policies cover hereditary and congenital issues.

  • Proper Documentation

You will need to provide your pet's vaccination certificate, medical history, or results from an exam by the certified veterinarian.

  • Upfront Payment
You will be expected to pay the costs of your pet’s healthcare and treatment up front and then apply for reinbursement.

Veterinary costs up 60% over the past decade

Veterinarians nationwide reported that corporate managers pushed clinics to focus on profit, encouraging them to see more pets, order more tests, and upsell services.

Pet insurance could help you offset some of these rising costs, with some providing up to 90% reimbursement.

View Money’s top pet insurance picks to see plans starting at only $10/month.

While veterinary costs in Mexico are far less expensive than what you will pay in the U.S. and Canada, surgery for your furry family member after a bad accident or treatment of a chronic illness can still run into the thousands of dollars.

Pet Insurance is Also Available in Mexico

The right policy can help cover the cost of expensive medical procedures and medications for your pet in the event of an accident or serious illness. Some policies will compensate you in the event of the loss, theft or death of your pet.

Pet Insurance Providers in Mexico

  • GNP: Offers pet insurance that you can quote for online

  • BBVA México: Offers pet insurance for dogs and cats

  • THB Mexico: Offers customized pet insurance solutions, including unlimited telephone guidance and legal advice.

The factors that weigh in on your decision to purchase a pet insurance policy is Mexico will be unique to you, your pet and your financial situation. If you are considering a policy, first talk to your vet about the estimated costs for surgery and treatment of chronic illness or cancer. Then, contact several providers and find out the costs and available coverage for your pet. You may decide that it is manageable for you to pay-as-you-go.

🍼 Tiny Hearts, Big Needs: Helping Save Newborns in Playa del Carmen

Did you know … the Playa del Carmen General Hospital has no neonatal heart monitors? That means doctors and nurses must work without the critical tools needed to track a baby’s heart rate and oxygen levels, often forced to make life-or-death decisions without real-time data.

The consequences? Delays in diagnosis, missed warning signs, and tragic losses that could have been prevented.

In response to this need, the Rotary Club of Playa del Carmen Seaside is raising $12,000 USD to provide:

(2) Rad-97 Pulse Co-Oximeters – Detects oxygen deprivation early, preventing brain damage and respiratory failure.

(4) Benefusion EVP Infusion Pumps – Ensures newborns receive precise doses of lifesaving medications and fluids.

Right now, doctors rely on visual assessments, leading to dangerous delays. With these devices, newborns will get the immediate and precise care they need—saving hundreds of lives every year.

💙 How You Can Help:

  • Donate: Every dollar gets us closer to acquiring this essential medical equipment.

  • Sponsor: Donors over $500 USD will be recognized on a hospital thank-you plaque; $5,000 USD+ donors can dedicate a monitor.

  • Share: Spreading the word can be just as powerful as donating!

These newborns can’t ask for help—but we can. Join Seaside Rotary in giving these babies a fighting chance.
